Another thing may be that your pictures are in a format with extremely large 
files.  If you use high resolution pictures in any format that produce large 
files it will take some time to load them.

If this is the case, change your images to a .jpg format and downsize the 
resolution to the 300-600 dpi range and it will work much faster.

I think it might just be that you are asking your computer to do a job which it 
struggles with.  Does your computer generally run fairly slowly?
Does it have plenty of RAM (memory) and free hard disk space?  Is the computer 
fairly old or reasonably new?
