We recently started a Legacy Virtual Users Group (we have had two meetings so far). I decided to do this because I travel so I am not in the same place all the time, and I wanted to be able to attend a meeting without the concerns of travel, weather, finding the location, etc. The people who expressed interest are from various places - one travels in a motor home, some are in different timezones. If you can agree on a time and day, it is quite workable and you can get input from a diverse group of people who all have one thing in common - Legacy Family Tree.
I put the suggestion on Google+ and got 7 responses. Our first meeting was to see if there was any interest (and we took a poll to gather information, skill level, program usage, add on programs, what people wanted to learn about, etc.). The second meeting was about introducing ourselves and discussing our use of Legacy in general - we discussed customizing the program and the look of our Legacy setups. Our third meeting will be about sources and our fourth meeting will be about tags/tagging. One person acts as moderator and after a 20-30 presentation (you can use your screen or slides prepared in Google that we can all see), the next 30 minutes is open to questions, suggestions, "this is how I do" type of discussion. We "meet" on Google+ in a hangout (that is why it is virtual) which allows for up to 10 attendees. If you have not tried a hangout they are great for getting together in a small group tha you can see and hear and speak with in real time. You can share screens to see what someone is doing and talking about, you can work on a document together and/or share notes. One of the people who has expressed an interest is thinking of doing it for Canada (East). On a slightly different note, a similar idea is being processed by the Guild of One Name Studies (GOONS) because the membership is regional, national and international. I have been on with GOONS members as close as Arizona (not that close) and as far away as England, Scotland and Australia. It works brilliantly. I think the idea of "hanging out" is a good way to include homebound (either due to illness or children!), time constrained (would love to attend a meeting but only have the hour and don't have driving time), transportation constrained (are unable to attend meetings due to transportation issues), weather or distance constrained, or a variety of other issues/reasons. If anyone is interested in this idea, please contact me and I would be happy to work with you - webinars are great and I love them but it is also nice to have a small group to bounce ideas off or share how each of you do things in Legacy and be able to see real live screens and input.
