I am a bit unclear on tagging a record, but as to tagging as it
relates to individuals or marriages, I use tags for a variety of
reasons.  Tag 1 is my paternal direct line; Tag 2 is my maternal
direct line; and Tag 9 to mark if I need to fix something or do some
cleanup. Right now, Tag 4 is my 1940 Census finds when all information
has been entered and noted for all family members. I can clear that
tag once I have finished that project.
On another occasion, I was doing my Norwegian research. I used Tag 3
for Norway Census 1801, Tag 4 for Norway Census 1865 and Tag 5 for
Norway Census 1875, Tag 6 for Farmbook entries, Tag 7 for
Birth/Baptism record, Tag 8 for Marriage record, Tag 9 for
Death/Burial record. I marked the people off as I searched and found
(or did not find) the appropriate information. I did the same type of
thing for my Swedish research. It is helpful to combine your search
results (areas you plan to research) with some system for marking
whether you have done it or not.
Depending on the type of project you are working on you can tag a
group to work on and/or tag a group that you don't need to work on.
Then when you work through the list you can click on their tags as
appropriate. I am sure others with tell you various ways they use
tagging. Also if you go to advanced tagging you see you can tag
various lines (ancestors, descendants, family line, family, everyone,
everyone in search list, etc.), and then work with that group for a
particular project. Lots of possibilities. Still not sure about
tagging a record though - will be interested in what that is.
