I have not used the subscription form in a while but when we originally
moved to the current list management software there was an
auto-responder that had the user click a link in the reply to validate
their subscription. That had a terrible failure rate because the link
that was sent frequently split over multiple lines and did not work for
some email clients or had an extra space inserted that made the link
invalid for many users.

I do not know if they are still sending out the auto-responses but I
have not seen the complaints about broken links on this list for a long
time. The frequency of the complaints about not receiving emails is much
less than those about broken links.
