Judith, I have just had a couple of other thoughts. Do you use Firefox by any chance as the latest, and last few, versions eat up RAM. I would also run Task Manager (ctrl+alt+del) immediately after start up to see if there are any clues there. Also check the programs which are opening at start-up, you may find some have decided that they have a right to be there, even if you don't!
