Marianne, I just recently received an email to update Families Sync to v1.4.5.0, which I did, but the app itself on your Kindle Fire should update automatically.
I just double checked the app and it shows v1.6.0, which is the latest build of the app itself. So it updated automatically. You can get the latest Families Sync at http://www.telgen.co.uk/families/download/publish.htm (On the Families webpage http://www.telgen.co.uk/families/, there's a small link at the bottom on the left, just above the Legacy icon, that says "Download Families Sync" In the Kindle Fire, to check for app updates, tap on Apps > Store, then the menu button and "App Updates".
