I suggest you read back in the recent archives. The discussion has been very
concerning, but no need repeating it now when its available in the archives.

Hi, I'm newly back to the list after several years away. Am coming in on this
conversation in the middle, so please forgive duplicate comments and such.

I use Dropbox for my immediately real time file saves, synching and reading
from all my devices (also has mobile component), but I also use Carbonite for
daily backup of everything onto their servers which hold my data in redundant
copies on several servers at several physical sites. Have once had to backup
from Carbonite. It went very well. Compared to Mozy, which didn't and drove me
nuts. So Dropbox is my daily use cloud service and Carbonite is my "vault."
Carbonite will also do a mirror image of your entire system, os, programs,
settings and all, for some extra money, but so far I haven't done that. I know
I should. Also well advised is one's own external local backup, but I haven't
had much luck with that. Probably need to buy a larger capacity external drive.

Has this subject come up in relation to the epic hack experienced last week by
Mat Honan? Where by way of iTunes and Amazon, his entire online, mobile and
computer life, everything, even including pictures of his baby daughter, was
erased within a matter of about 15 minutes? And unrecoverable? Whoa, what a
story.

So I've been going back through all my sites eliminating, changing, resetting
security in, etc., but it's a long slog. Also, advice is not to fail to
establish Google Second Step Authentication, which is supposed to pretty much
stop any hack attempts. Since I basically don't trust Google and don't use
Google, I'm hesitant. But since my smartphone is Android, I guess I'd better.

Mat Honan's story, a cautionary tale if I ever heard one.

Moral of all these stories: multiple backups + intelligent, diligent privacy
setting = happy computing & ancestor hunting.

If in your purse, I would encrypt it. Identity theft. If you loose that
particular device, or purse .....

I am fortunate, I have my bank with a safety box about two minutes from my
home. I am just limited by their hours. For me, $28 dollars a year is worth it.

As I have mentioned in other posts, I use two portable hard drives that cycle
back and forth from my bank.

On another note,
Anyone used the 'M' disk yet ? Comments if so.
