I have a similar situation with 3 great uncles, each of whom changed their surname to something different than the others. I've handled it two ways, both in the main surname field, as I don't consider a surname change the same as an aka. Martin Saretzki/Smith Martin Saretzki [[later Smith]] I'm not crazy about either, but having both names in the main surname field makes them, and particularly their descendants, easier to track. I also added a name change event for all 3 and their wives and children, with documentation for their petitions to change their names between 1900 and 1920. I have been using Legacy aka's for spelling variations and nicknames but when a person changes their SURNAME, how do you handle that?  Same way?  It does not feel right.  I don't have a year yet but have a range of sometime in the late 1920's after serving in WW I.   I am hoping to find a legal record some day.  This person never drove a car or needed a passport.  This person never went overseas after WW I.  Maybe he had to prove something for social security enrollment in 1936?
