Thanks for your reply, Bruce. At first I misinterpreted what you'd said - as did a friend who was having similar problems - and I was going to ask for clarification today to get it right. But another read of what you'd written told me you were spot-on the first time, and it was my brain jumbling it up that was the problem.
For others reading who might have done the same as me at first - the trick is to ignore where the marker is at present and right-click on the spot you want to mark. A box will pop up asking you "would you like to set the Lat/Long to the Right Clicked location?"; answer OK and the marker will move to that point. (I was right-clicking on the marker before, which does not produce the desired effect!)
