One error suggests other errors.

Maine was NEVER part of New York. First English settlement was in 1607. It
became a province/district of MASSACHUSETTS 1652 until 1820, but was still
called Maine as a section of Mass, so place names generally say Maine with the
understanding that before 1820 was technically Mass. and should say Maine in
family trees or duplicate town names in both places will get confused. Settlers
considered themselves in Maine, and were eventually successful in petitioning
for independence. All of Maine was York County until 1760.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Some dates for British Colonies in America

Here is some information that John and others on the list may find useful
regarding dates for some of the colonies that eventually became the United
States. Please keep in mind these are neither definitive nor comprehensive. I
created this list to give myself some guidelines to follow when researching in
specific colonies. I collected the information from various sources both in
print and on the internet. I use 4 July 1776 as the "ending" date for some
colonies even though the official dates of statehood are after the
Revolutionary War.

Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

1636-4 July 1776

Little Compton was annexed to Newport County in 1746/47

Connecticut Colony

1636-4 July 1776

aka River Colony (sorry, no specifics on River Colony)

Saybrook Colony

1635-1644

merged with Connecticut Colony in 1644

New Haven Colony

1637-1662

merged with Connecticut Colony in 1662

New Hampshire Colony

1623-1641 and 1680-1688

was part of Massachusetts Bay Colony 1641-1679 and 1688-1691

Province of New Hampshire

1691-4 July 1776

Province of Maine

1622-1664

incorporated into Cornwell County, Province of New York in 1664

Massachusetts Bay Colony

1630-1691

included New Hampshire 1641-1679 and 1688-1691

Plymouth Colony

1620-1691

included Little Compton 1682-1746

first counties in Colony formed in 1685

merged with Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1691

Province of Massachusetts Bay

1691-4 July 1776

combined Massachusetts Bay Colony, Plymouth Colony, Province of Maine,
Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard and Nova Scotia

Here are a few territories. Same caveats as above.

Illinois Territory

formed 1809 from Indiana Territory; included present-day Illinois, most of
Wisconsin and large parts of Michigan and Minnesota

Indiana Territory

formed 1800 from the western part of the Northwest Territory; included the
Lower Peninsula of Michigan; included all of Michigan by 1803

Iowa Territory

formed 1838 from the portion of the Wisconsin Territory west of the Mississippi
River

Michigan Territory

formed 1805 from Indiana Territory; included the eastern tip of the Upper
Peninsula and all of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan; the southern boundary was
a line drawn through the southernmost tip of Lake Michigan

Northwest Territory

formed 1787; included present-day Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin
and the eastern part of Minnesota; dissolved 1803 when Ohio became a state;
Michigan annexed to Indiana Territory

Wisconsin Territory

formed 1836 from Michigan Territory; included all of present-day Wisconsin,
Iowa & Minnesota plus parts of North and South Dakota

The frequently shifting political boundaries of the then-growing United States
make things challenging for us now. Hopefully this information will help a
little.
