Your data is saved when you click "Save" on the edit window that you're in. If you're referring to backing up the Family File, the reminder only pops up when you have made changes to the data in the Family File. If you have somehow turned off the pop-up reminder, go to Options > Customize .> Other and click on the 'Turn On or Off Optional Reminder Messages". The back up prompt is in the Prompts/Reminders tab.
