As I mentioned in my first message I did set the privacy settings to 
"invisible".  But what I did not understand was that this only works in 
"reports".  I was using the Descendant Tab at the top of the page.  When I 
tried an actual "descendant report" the "invisible" setting worked as it 
should. Non-existent problem solved.  Thank you for your patients.

What are your settings on the Privacy Tab of the Report Options then? Do
you perhaps have include Invisible people turned on?

Also check the Individuals information screen or search for those who
are marked invisible to make sure everyone you expect to be excluded is
marked correctly.
Search > Find > Detailed Search tab
Look for  individuals whose private is equal to invisible
