Whenever I download a file from Ancestry I download it straight into
IrfanView (free program, much recommended by many LUGgers but you can
choose to use whatever picture editing software you like) so that I can
crop it, straighten it or improve its clarity and then I save it. I
could choose to save them as Tiffs, but as it happens, practically all
the ex-Ancestry documents are saved as Jpegs because it is not necessary
to have a huge, high-quality file for a Census image or Parish Register
image which is never going to be edited again. I've just checked - I
have 3,790 Census images and at least 1,204 Parish Register images
already: would take a heck of a lot of hard drive space if they were
all Tiffs!
