Kathy - late to the conversation - but you might want to take a look at various social security dates. In general, (and this is from memory), farmers weren't required to get them until something like the mid-60s. Self-employed folks also were required to get them much later. Many wives used their husband's social security numbers. I don't have my database handy but I believe the women who then filed on a husband's social security number had either an A or a B attached to the husband's original number for their claim. Railroad workers were covered under railroad retirement - and federal employees were also on their own system.
Anyone fitting that criteria, I might place farther down my list. It certainly doesn't mean they didn't have one - but they are less likely than others.
