I know I'm replying to a slightly old thread, and am slightly changing the subject, but:
I've started using three different "Event/Facts" in my tree to cover employment. I use Job for a specific job. I use Occupation for a job title that covers most of the person's life. I use Industry for an industry where the person worked most of his/her life. So "Insurance Agent" is an Occupation, but "Insurance" is an Industry. The second tends to get used when someone "rose up the chain" in one industry: they had different jobs/occupations, but only one industry. Another example is "Physical Therapist" is an Occupation, and "Physical Therapy" is an Industry, although "Health Care" might be a better industry. Of course, Job is much more specific than either of those. My goal in all this is to make Legacy's reports as "Historical" as possible, and make the flow a smoothly as possible. What exactly is the difference between an Event and a Fact? When I think of Events I always think of this connected with a date, while when thinking about a Fact I don't necessarily connect this with a date. An Occupation is something I think of more as belonging to the category Fact than an Event. An Occupation is something that covers a time span and not, IMHO, connected to a specific date or it can be just a piece of information about a person's life without any connection with a date, therefore a fact. Is this the kind of distinction that other have made or are there other ways of looking at things? If so what are those ways? I would like to receive some feedback on this question. Thank you for your comments.
