Sue, I will tell you what I did in my own family where this happened. Even though the man was already married at the time he married again, that second marriage (the illegal one) still had a marriage license and certificate. I recorded this as a marriage and used the license/certificate as the source. In the marriage notes I explained the entire situation. In my case he never went back and got a divorce from the first lady so there was no legal remarriage. In your case I would have a divorce event within the marriage events of the first wife using the divorce decree as the source. I would also record the subsequent marriage as an additional marriage event under the second wife using that marriage license/certificate as the source. What I want is for the person’s timeline to be correct even if part of the timeline is illegal :)
