Gedcoms are only used if you're sharing genealogy data files between
two different programs - let's say between FTM and Legacy.

Otherwise you want to do a backup of the Family File (File > Backup
Family File) to move the data to another computer using Legacy.

If you're working with a group of people (or even one other person) on
a file and you all have Legacy, the best way to handle that is to use
IntelliShare. You can find details on that in the Help file in Legacy
or in the Tips section of the website
http://legacyfamilytree.com/tipsIntShare.asp

You very well may have duplicates and if you do, you will need to
merge those duplicates.

I don't recommend importing a gedcom directly into your Family File.
Per the recommendation when you start the import, import it into a
*new* Family File. Then clean it up - make sure the data is good and
appropriate, run File > File Maintenance > Check/Repair, the Potential
Problems report and check the Master Location List for formatting of
locations and check on quality of sources. If you clean it up now
it'll be a lot easier than trying to clean it up in the main database.

Then if the file is worth keeping, back up your main Family File (File
> Backup Family File) and import that new Legacy file into your main
file. Go through the Merge > Find Duplicates process (you'll get a
dialog box asking if you want to go to the Family/Pedigree view or do
a merge - select the merge.

A lot of users will use the IntelliShare feature if they're using the
database on more than one computer. Other options are a home network,
keeping the file on an external drive or using a file sharing site
like Dropbox or SkyDrive.

Sherry
