Ron, Wikipedia is long outdated. Greater Manchester existed for only about 20 years from 1974. Offhand I'm not dead sure as to when it was abolished.
Before someone jumps in with GM Police, Ambulance Service etc. these are only names given to services jointly managed by the metropolitan boroughs which were previously part of GM. For old fogies like me it is still Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, England (not Lanarkshire as my spell checker insists!).
