John, Many anti-malware programs have ‘memory resident’ components. Uninstalling is only part of the process. The computer must be restarted after the uninstall for memory to be cleared of those components. Still others, are written to protect against malware uninstalling or disabling the program. Still others can not be removed using the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS in control panel (Avast! being one) For those you need to use a special uninstall program. You can find the one for Avast! on their website: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility. Be sure to follow the directions on that page, which includes starting Windows in Safe Mode before starting the utility and restarting the computer. Only then will you have uninstalled Avast!.
You may then be able to install Legacy 8. But…if you are installing from a download, not a CD, it’s possible that the downloaded file is corrupted. If installation fails after fully deleting Avast, download the installation file again.
