From scanning a few messages this morning it seems that noone has been informed about the great new media tools in Legacy 8 and how to use them when converting from Legacy 7 OR has skipped reading.
John Lisle has made mention of them and how great they are but you all need to know that the Tools Ribbon has two new tools to help with media. Paul, what you said about media and changing computers was exactly right for Legacy 7 and earlier but not for Legacy 8 When your file is converted into Legacy 8, if the media isn't automatically linked (or all linked) then run the Media Relinker. If your media is all on a particular drive make sure you deselect the other drives before you start. It takes a while (minutes) but is great. When it finds the possibles, if there is more than one, make sure you choose the one in the folder where you attached things to Legacy or the folder where you now wish to attach things from if you've shifted the images. The folder where the image is is at the bottom of the screen just above the buttons. If you choose the second button then all other media in that folder and its subfolders will be relinked. I've relinked thousands of files with just a few clicks when I've restored files from old computers where all the paths were different. If you've been undisciplined and your media is linked from all over the place, Gather My Media Tool is for you, to get you organised. If you've only been a little bit undisciplined and most of your media is in one folder or one folder and its sub-folders, make sure Gather My Media is set to the parent folder and that you don't tick the option to move media up from the sub-folders. Then it will just collect the few scattered files from around your computer and relink them from the parent folder. The Media paths are now or can use codes. [Default Media Folder] is the code for the folder specified in 6.2. If you look at the Sample File - View - Master Lists - Media Folder List OR Option 6.2 - View Current List of Media Folders then you will see the sample file media is in [Default Media Folder]\ Other codes include [My Documents] and [My Pictures] These take the place of the full path which includes drive and username. So where these are used, changing computers is a dream. If you use [Default Media Folder]\ then at most you need to alter 6.2 to the parent folder for your media on the other computer. If when you look at where your media is at View - Master Lists - Media Folder, these codes are not being used and you're likely to change computers often. Then use Search - Search and Replace on the Lists - Media Folders and change as required - or get a computer savvy grandchild or friend to do it for you. I replaced: D:\Documents\Dropbox\Legacy Pictures\ with [Default Media Folder]\ making sure I only replaced found text. Now I just have to set the Default Media Folder on the other computer and all my media is linked correctly despite the fact that on the other computer the beginning of the path is quite different. Once you are straight in Legacy 8, when you go to add Media through the Media Gallery, if it's not in the Default Media Folder, you'll be asked if you want it copied there and linked from there. An advanced tab gives you the option of specifying another folder (like one of the sub-folders of the default media folder). The Picture Centre on the other hand assumes you know what you are doing when you link from your Downloads folder or some other scattered location.
