I find that when a person is highlighted as the main person of interest, (or as one of the parents of a person), then the colours work OK - e.g. Husband/Wife is in red when they are alive and black if they are dead. But if you move them to the children's list, by clicking on a parent then the colour shown is somewhat random. e.g. My grandmother had 10 siblings and all show correctly when they are the highlighted person. But as children of my gt grandparents 4 are showing as dead and the other 7 are shown as living - despite there being a death date for all 11 of them in the database. Equally, I and my 3 children show on the children list as dead, but all very much alive on the database.
