I am using Win7 in the 32 bit configuration and had no problems with installing
Legacy8. It used the same GeoDB as Legacy7 was using. After the current build
update I downloaded the GeoDB and installed the database and when I opened
Legacy8 it started using the new one in the new location which installed in the
Program Data folder >Legacy Family Tree>GeoDB.

Dee,

32 bit vs 64 bit is a factor of your computer hardware. Most, if not all,
modern PCs are 64 bit. So... Win7 32 bit is today a somewhat "rare"
configuration.

If you are considering a new laptop, I wan sure it will be 64 bit and whether
you use Win 7 or Win8, it will not have a problem with Legacy.

Warning... tech talk which may be TMI... :-)

The issue with the GeoDB was a factor of Win7 32 bit OS because none of the
developers and testers must have that configuration. Win XP is mostly a 32 bit
world, but it has to do with how the Windows Registry in each hardware/OS
configuration is setup. I believe that this issue may have prompted some other
changes to account for this configuration.

I use Win7/64bit, but I have laptops that run Win 8 and Win XP for doing
testing. Enough folks are using Win8 (really now 8.1??) with Legacy and doing
well. I think that the issue is really if you have good PC support for Win 8 if
you go that way now, but being closer to be ing up to date is probably the way
you want to go, in my humble opinion.

john.

I'm considering a new Windows laptop (ONLY for Legacy8 and genealogy) and my
techie grandson suggests Windows 7 instead of Windows 8. Does that have
anything to do with 32 bit or 64 bit OS? What's the relevance to Legacy8? I
haven't upgraded from v7 yet. (Reply privately if this is off-limits. I truly
plan to use it ONLY for Legacy8, and my MacBook for everything else.) Thanks,
non-techie Dee in Maryland
