This doesn't happen in 8. One of several changes to Pedigree View. To change focus you have to double click and move the person to the starting position.
To see the information that was in the panels you must set the option in Customise 1.7 for the pop-up to pop-up automatically or on a click. You can double click on the people in the pop-up to change focus to them so you can still move around and you can still see the information - it's just in a different place.
