OK, I must be colourblind. More probably just old age - I was convinced I set 
them up in different colours in L7 - just checked and they are black! Apologies 
to everyone for sending misleading information :)

The parents and husband/wife have always been black - they have never had 
gender colors.

The Husband and Wife labels can be set to show a color based on living status.  
Could that be what you're thinking of?
