IIRC: The "United States" was officially born in Oct 1797. Between The Treaty of Paris and Oct 1797, we were a Confederation. Between the Surrender at Yorktown and the Treaty of Paris -- I've never seen an official collective noun. Far's I've seen, only the state-name was being used for the 13-originals.
