Hi Alexa,
As others have already mentioned, Legacy does not do automatic updates. You have to, at the very least, click on the Update tab, then choose to install the update. Legacy 7.5 was the latest before v8 was released. Legacy 7.5 could read any of your previous files. If you had a copy of your file on an external drive then that could have been copied to your new computer and it would have worked with Legacy 7.5 after the reinstall. In fact you could still do that, but you may not want to if you have made any changes to you file since using v8. v8’s ‘interface ribbon’ is a big change to the program and change takes a some getting used to. There has been no dramatic change to the interface since the release. Stick with v8, it is the better program with some great enhancements over v7.5. And, continue to do the updates! There is a whole group here willing to help if you get stuck on something. All the best, Bob A From: Alexa [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, March 28, 2014 8:18 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [LegacyUG] How do I prevent automatic updates to Legacy 8? Mar 17 I'd like to know how to prevent automatic updates to Legacy 8. I've only had the program for about two weeks, am still learning it, and a week ago, I attempted to add more people and discovered there has been an update that has made dramatic changes to the interface (ribbon?)! I want don't want automatic updates. How can I stop them? I was using Legacy 7.5 which I like so much better, but somewhere along the line it updated so much that I couldn't transfer my old file to a new computer after installing with my Legacy 7.5 CD. My old computer broke before I could make a new gedcom, and my new computer couldn't read my file that I had stored on an external hard drive because even though I have the program disk for Legacy 7.5, the updates are no longer available online, and the file was no longer compatible with Legacy 7.5. I had to buy Legacy 8 to read my file. Now the darn thing is already updating without my permission and has made dramatic changes to the program. Please Help!!! Thanks.
