The Index view in Legacy 8 still has the zoom option! It is invoked in exactly the same way as in 7.5. Click Options and select Zoom.
I do not know why you think Legacy is using the minimum font size on pedigree view. My min font is the default 6 points and the font size on my Pedigree is well above that.
