How many pictures have you attached to the person? If there are only three those are all that can display. I just tested a person with 8 pictures linked to them and I see my reply to Pat was incorrect. The left position displays one picture, next tick displays 4 in a 2x2 matrix, third displays 6 in a 3x2 matrix and the right displays a nine in a 3x3 matrix.
I am not one of the programmers and I have no idea what limitations there are in defining the space for the picture plus the caption and tagging tick boxes. What you call wasted space may be imposed by screen design constraints which only the programmers know.
