Hi Lloyd,
You said "It is hard to remember those things...".
I'm hopeless at remembering to run backups when I should. You'd think I
would know better, given my situation (have lost entire hard drives in
the past, and have some tertiary-level education in the technology!) and
yet I forget constantly.
That's why I like automatic systems that do not rely on me having to
remember to do something. For example, I use Dropbox to store all my
files (not just the free space, I pay for extra so I can put
*everything* I value there), in addition to occasional backups to an
external hard drive.
In Legacy, I have the option set to ask me if I want to run a backup
whenever I exit the program. To find this, in Legacy v8 go to Customise
(Options > Customise) then click on "12. Other Settings". Scroll down to
"12.5 Message boxes (gbl), and click on the large button "Turn on or off
Optional Reminder Messages...".
In the new window that appears ("Optional Reminder Messages"), go to the
Prompts/Reminders tab. Look at all the options there, and consider
ticking every box that mentions 'backup', especially the third one,
"Reminder to make a backup when exiting Legacy".
These options will work on any file you open in Legacy, not just the
current file you have open. That's what the (gbl) means - global. (ff)
means family file, and any setting marked with that will only affect the
currently-open data file.
In Legacy v7.5 you get there through Options > Customise > Other tab >
"Turn on or off Optional Reminder Messages...".
Make use of all the options available to you in the backup routine -
backup all the file types offered, and append the time and date to the
backup's filename, so it is unique and easy to see when it was created.
If you don't already store your Legacy data files in some sort of cloud
storage (Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, etc), consider putting your
backups there. It's an added safeguard should something go wrong one
day and you lose everything on your computer (fire, flood, power
spike...). Dropbox offers extra free space when someone accepts an
invitation to join (for both the invited and invitee), so consider
getting a friend to invite you to the service if you want to sign up to
it. I have no idea if other services offer anything like this, check
around first and get the most benefit you can right from the start.
Note that if you open Legacy but don't make any changes to your data
before exiting, you won't be prompted to run the backup.
Hope this helps. :-)
Kind Regards,
Wendy
