I don't see why there's a problem putting a space after the month.  In
fact, that's the way I would choose to do it for all members of the
family.  If you enter [[01 September ]]2014 the date will display
correctly in a Report, either as "2014", or as "01 September 2014" if
you override the Privacy option.

If you enter the date as [[01 September]]2014 it will not display
correctly when Privacy is overruled ("01 September2014" - no space
between date and year) and if you enter the date as [[01 September]]
2014 it will not display correctly when Privacy is preserved (" 2014" -
a space in front of the year.
