I rise to object, m'lud. ;)

As recently as January 2014 AFNs were visible and usable at
FamilySearch. Granted, the Ancestral File (as an entity) is
closed and no more AFNs are being issued. Still, I'm not
sure that their being out-dated and/or replaced is
sufficient reason to prevent people using those they already
have. Many non-LDS won't bother to change the AFN to the PID
-- heck, a lot of LDS won't bother either. AFNs are also
useful in so many ways not directly connected to FamilyTree.
And having the AFN on some people is the ONLY way to
figure out where a specific piece of data originated.

EVEN if all that can be done with them this year is include
them in a print-out, there's no reason to make 'em disappear.

[For an exercise in pain, check out the AF for the name
Marmaduke Swearingen -- last time I counted there were about
a dozen PLUS another 6 or so under his pseudonym while in
the tribes of the Iroquois nation. SOME of the data is
identical, SOME is unique to a specific AFN, and if more
than about 20% of any of it can be proven by today's
standard's, I'll be amazed. Still -- the only way to know
which version one copied from is the AFN.]
