So, you folks are saying that you're willing to export your entire database to a GEDCOM file to get rid of all your SourceWriter sources & citations? (not delete, but convert)
Why do you want to get rid of them? I mean, if the information in the citation is correct, leave them there, and use Basic sources exclusively as you move forward. ? Personally, I don't know enough about what other "corners" are being cut in a GEDCOM export. The definition of GEDCOM is pretty old, and applications have moved forward, trying their best to map back into it. (at least that's my perception) I would be worried about what else I could lose in the process, and is it worth that risk to convert perfectly good SourceWriter citations? Right now, I am using a mixture. There are now too many templates to choose from, so in many cases I use the Basic and just type in what the website said in its citation. ;) (Pat, there's a program someone wrote that reads through the Legacy database and reformats all the information into the record definitions of GEDCOM (an industry standard), and another program that reads the records in a GEDCOM and reformats the information to load into the Legacy database. A similar program would need to be written to convert things WITHIN the Legacy database, not using an intermediate GEDCOM file. The GEDCOM was developed so various genealogy applications could "talk to" each other... really, it's less "talking to" than translating twice, once to GEDCOM and then into the next application. Wow, I got much longer winded on that than I meant to!) And given their investment in SourceWriter, I don't think writing a conversion program to get rid of them is high on Millenia's list... they didn't write a conversion program to go from Basic to SourceWriter. (not that I think it was possible to do that, just saying) --Paula ________________________________ From: singhals <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Friday, October 10, 2014 5:58 PM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Global Master Source Conversion Oh, it can. It's just labor-intensive and time-consuming. GED does it faster and saves you irritation.
