You are ignoring the clicks or mouse wheel effort to scroll through the 20 concatenated messages. One click to open and 20 clicks to page through the 20 messages.
When you add the extra effort to trim out the 19 messages you are not replying to (which no one ever does) a digest is much more difficult to use for those who are doing more than lurking.
