Backing up to another folder on your computer does not gain much other than preventing you from modifying the original (which is what this thread was really about). But you are still at risk of losing everything should your hard drive fail or computer get lost, stolen, or destroyed. You are best served if you back up to a different physical media or location such as another computer, a DVD, the “cloud”, or even a hard copy from your local Walgreens.

I always copy them to a temporary folder for editing , I never work on the originals. I know Picasa does not change them but I just do not risk them being altered. My pictures are saved in a pictures folder and then by year and then by date and when I open Picassa it reads from that location.
