Al,

I will use my uncle as an example. He changed his name completely (whether he
did it legally or not is not known). His name of record in Legacy is the name
he was born with. I added his new name as an AKA and I explained the name
change in the notes. His daughter was born under the new name. I entered her
name as it was at the time of her birth. Her name does not match her father’s
but that is okay. I always record the name at BIRTH for consistency’s sake.

IF this had been a legal name change and IF I had the court documents in my
possession, then I would add an event for the name change. Since I don’t even
know if my uncle did this legally or not I don’t have an event for this.

P.S. This is just the way I do it. You will probably get umpteen different
opinions :)

Michele

Subject: [LegacyUG] Legal Name Changes

Hello Legacy Users,

This is my first venture into this group so I apologize if I am violating
some expected protocol for participating.

I have a question that I have been advised that the Users Group may have
some suggestions. I have a situation where a family member legally changed his
surname. My question is: what is the preferred way of incorporating this fact
into Legacy 8? I do not know the year when this occurred. All children have
the new name.

    Looking forward to your suggestions.

Al
