Hi Scott,

If you know there is a second spouse but no offspring, then you have
some information even if you don't have a name - so I'd use Given Name -
blank or Mrs Smith or second wife of husband's name; Surname -
[[husband's surname]] and add the source to the "name". I guess you
could just add it to the marriage that has been created.

Note: The [[ ]] are privacy brackets so this information isn't included
in reports/exports. I don't like having to work out whether Smith was
their actual maiden surname or their husband's. Others use [--?--] for
an unknown surname. But I don't like a list of Mary [--?--] and more
than I like a list of Mary's with no indication of where they connect.

If you know there is a child to a different marriage, add the child as
an unlinked individual and then link to the known parent. This
automatically creates a new "marriage" with blank partner.

Deleting this child does not delete the "marriage" - so that's a shorter
route to what you're doing now but as I said before, if you know there
was a marriage, then that's information that should be recorded so I'd
choose a convention for that unknown spouse.

Cathy
