Sorry, I am talking about Manual merging.
example : Bob Jones = Mary Brown is manually merged with Robert Jones and
Mary.
often times the result will be Robert Jones with 2 wives, other times Legacy
will open the other duplicates process allowing the merge of Mary with Mary
Brown.
extrapolating this:
Would be a family of 20 individuals that suddenly are noticed as duplicates of
another set with, parallel streams with differences. Is there a prescribed
pattern to manually merge them.

Ian,
When merging duplicate records within your family file, Legacy's Automerge
feature can be used to automatically merge records that it determines are
most certainly the same person. After the first pair of duplicates is
encountered that can be AutoMerged, Legacy offers to run through the entire
merge and do all the remaining Automerge pairs all at once. This can
usually save a substantial amount of time. This option is called
IntelliPass. To let Legacy continue with this pass, click Yes.

follow that will avoid most of these duplications. I have noticed
sometimes the merge goes as planned and others not.
