You first have to realize that a “bug” could be anything from something so mundane as a missing punctuation character in a written report to a critical error that results in a BSOD. Through the process of doing nothing other than entering names and source citations, you’ve probably come across some such minor bugs but never noticed them. Legacy does an excellent job of manipulating what’s in the database and maintaining integrity of that data. I think where a lot of the bugs are appearing are in the creation of the various reports and in various formats such as text, PDFs, and web pages. Web page creation is a special area which continues to have a multitude of small bugs but as many have pointed out, first and foremost this is a genealogical database program and not an HTML editor.
The balancing act that the programmers have to handle is to make sure that any bug that affects the stability of the program or the integrity of the users data obviously would get their top priority while minor bugs such as a missing period at the end of certain sentences in reports will get their attention only when other pressing matters will permit it. If you’re not seeing any bugs, then maybe you want to jump further into some other aspects of the program such as the various reports creation, Legacy Charting, the Picture Center, the Multimedia Relinker, changing event definitions, etc. Sooner or later you will run across something that you recognize as not being quite right or not the way you expected it to turn out. That’s a bug. Quite frankly, I can’t think of any bug right now that is so severe that it limits the functionality of the program to such a degree that it becomes unusable. But there are bugs that spoil the appearance of written reports, or incorrectly handles the way images are placed on written reports, and many others that might make it difficult for the user to figure out how to continue with data entry. I’m sure others may post some of their discovered bugs that they’ve come across. The downside of having such a list of known bugs is that many users will jump into that element in which the bug occurs just to see what happens. And then they think, “oh my God!” Maybe ignorance is bliss after all. I asked for a work around for same sex marriages which I don’t consider a bug but rather a missing feature and am glad to hear it’s on its way with an immediate response. With the first same sex marriages legalised only about a year ago one wouldn’t expect it to be built into a program that has evolved over so long. But despite the fact I have a medium sized tree which includes emails and addresses of over 3000 living relatives I had no idea how alone was. I haven’t found a bug yet. L. I have used it from version 1 right through to version 8. No freezes no blue screens , just the odd error message advising that it would be a good idea to do file maintenance or compress the file to clear a database error. That always fixes it. So what am I doing wrong that I can’t get any of these bugs that Legacy is supposedly riddled with? I have two other software programs that are being regularly updated and that are full of bugs that do freeze the program and or my computer so I am not immune to bugs. It’s just that I am not getting my share on Legacy it seems Those software vendors don’t publicise bugs either until they show as fixed but then I wouldn’t expect them to unilaterally give their competitors ammunition to take away sales that are needed to fund ongoing development. It would be good to have the list from Legacy though to see what I am missing. J On an unrelated note I note that Wendy Howard was posting from NZ and has an ancestor surnamed Dunkly. Not a common name and I wonder if it was also spelled Dunckley 2 or 3 centuries ago. I have the daughter of a James and Heather Dunckley that arrived in NZ over 150 years ago marry into the family and so that name has only that 1 instance in my tree as a surname. At least you will know what has been reported. Legacy may never respond, but then you don't really expect them to.
