I have something similar with my brother. He's my mom's son but not my dad's and there was never a formal adoption, just a name change (I know there was paperwork but I do not have it nor have I seen it). I still list him as the adopted son of my father because that is the relationship they have. I just add a note explaining it. And I believe I have my dad set to his preferred parent so if I click on my brother's name, that's who shows up in the father's box.
