Most of the open source (and free) software does everything pricier commercial stuff does, although there will always be a learning curve. I like Legacy for a database and it formats many source citations correctly (but not all).
Expecting your software to write reports (or books) all by itself is probably not the the best way to get the job done. I export to a word processor (OpenOffice) and then re-write the canned stuff to flow better, reflect my conclusions, and incorporate historical events into the narrative.
