I didn't know that. As Cathy Pinner said, I don't bother about the method of
delivery, and treat the whole lot as letters, using the date (if any) as the
key thing in the detail, because I have them filed by person and then date.

Of course there are two kinds of letters -- I've been talking about
correspondence between me and other members of the family, about the family
history. But there are sometimes other letters too, usually older, which are
not necessarily by family members, but may mention members of the family.
Those may well be "one-off" letters, where the letter is the master source.
