Thank you, Brian, for your response. I shall follow your advice and edit for 
two events. Does this mean, however, that my edits/additions will be wiped out 
if new or modified timeline files are supplied as a result of Legacy updates or 
new version?

If you select the report options tab and turn on the timeline column
then the duration for events will be displayed in the timeline as a
horizontal bar between the start and end dates. Only the start date will
be included in the event list though.

If you want to mark the start and end of the event in the chronological
list you can edit the timeline files to have two events, one for the
Start of WW II on 1 Sep 1939 and the second to mark the end on 2 Sep 1945.
