When I posted my inquiry I thought to stop any controversy considering
the appropriateness of the subject being germane to LEGACY I'd request
off-line responses. I know some on the list can get nasty sometimes
berating an individual for posting something not pertaining to LEGACY.
Seems I was wrong in that I got chastised by some for directing responses
off-line and NOT having replies posted on the list - though some did
reply to the list. Maybe what is pertinent to LEGACY is in the eye of the
beholder.
So to try and get in good graces with everybody that inquired wanting to
know what responses I got I've collected the replies below. Those sent to
me off list are so noted. Any further discussion of this subject should
be send to the list. Thanks to all those who offered the input.

To respond to your question on Legacy mail list, WordPress is a host I'd
recommend based on my own and other people's experience. Wordpress.com is
very intuitive and has an excellent support team. Wordpress.org will let
you manage the site. And you can switch from .com to .org easily.
If your family tree is the main part of your site (as opposed to
narrative, photos and other media) then you have to know that it won't
let you upload the tree from Legacy. I ended up creating a PDF for each
branch of the family because my site is mainly a story, history,
pictures, etc.
Good luck,
Bena

Contrary to what others may think, the off-line approach is perfectly
acceptable especially when it gets into this subject matter which can be
hotly debated.
I very much doubt that you really want to jump into another program just
to create a web site that looks spiffy. Too many users on the Legacy
forum are all about these live website instead of the static website.
Im of a different opinion in that 99% of the sites on the web are
static which means just that the web page always appears just as you
designed it and users have to click on links to see other pages. No big
deal. Otherwise the learning curve on something like TNG may take you
months of trial and error until you are comfortable with finally making
your pages public. I doubt if you want to spend time to create a database
on the web server just so that users think it looks nice. Try creating a
static one first to get your feet wet and then later you may want to try
something different.
In the meanwhile, Legacy will easily create your static web pages for
you. Then, as you know, all you have to do is to upload them to a host.
That alone may require another program, FTP, for you to accomplish. Some
hosting sites have Windows based interfaces which can make it a little
easier but in reality a FTP program is just like Windows Explorer
.take a
file from this folder and copy it over to this folder on the server.
There are a multitude of hosting sites. I dont have any real preference
or cautions about any of them but here are a few suggestions.
First, make sure you get one that allows you to purchase only 3 months,
6 months, or maybe 1 year at a time. Sometimes the price is cheaper for a
1 year or more subscription but its all a waste if you decide after 2
months that you dont want to do it anymore. Try not to get locked into a
long term agreement like the cell phone companies.
Next, shop around. The going rate should be anywhere from $5 to $10 per
month. The bad news is that those are typically teaser rates which means
after the promotion period of 6 months or so, your monthly price jumps
back up to the regular price. Make sure you understand this and know what
the regular price will be.
Next, most sites are offering unlimited storage capacity. In reality
youll probably never use more than 2 or 3 GBs unless you have a large
family file with lots of linked pictures.
Next, as a bonus, most hosting sites will also offer you either finite
number of free email accounts or an unlimited number of accounts. So you
can actually start to use another email account such as [email protected]
or whatever the name of the host ends up being. Related to this issue is
another bonus in that most hosting sites will offer you a free domain
name. So you can select something like www.crull.com (unless its already
taken). In that case of where you pick a domain name, then your email
address can be created something like [email protected], or [email protected],
or whatever you choose. That alone sometimes makes getting a hosting site
worth the money.
Many hosting sites offer other things that youll probably never use
such as a shopping cart, and other very specific things related to
specialty web sites. If you dont know what the words or acronyms mean,
then dont worry about it. Its all something that youll never use.
Here is a link to my own web site. It very much needs updating and Im
slowly working on it. Now with a faster computer, the generation of my
web pages wont take forever:

Please have a look at TNG The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding
http://www.tngsitebuilding.com/
I maintain my family database in Legacy and upload a gedcom & new media
files every few weeks to my TNG website (hosted by Simply Hosting
http://www.simplyhosting.net/
I have been very pleased with the TNG / Simply Hosting option for over a
year and a half. The TNG home page has links to many user websites so
you can see what the possibilities are. FYI many TNG users are also
Legacy owners.
Id be happy to answer any questions you might have.

#1. This is a public list and requesting a private reply
deprives the rest of us who can learn from the responses you receive.
#2. I strongly suggest Simply Hosting
http://www.simplyhosting.net as a host. The price is right and the help
provided is the best. I run two websites with them:
http://www.sprague-database.org and http://www.ac-family.org .
#3. If you decide to create a website, strongly consider buying
The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding ("TNG")
http://www.lythgoes.net/genealogy/software.php to provide a most useful
graphical user interface for your visitors.
Please note that Simply Hosting will install TNG, for free, for you.
However, installing it yourself has its own pluses, if you are
comfortable with big/detailed installations. For TNG user support, there
is "a support forum, a wiki, a blog, and two mailing lists."
TNG is large, so there is a pretty good learning curve.
Hope this helps,
Arnold Sprague

Depending upon how fancy you want to get, you can use free hosting - just
google 'free web hosting'
If you don't have html or web design experience, you can use bloggers
such as word press or even google sites.
Much depends on your level of experience, what you wish to accomplish,
etc.
What exactly do you have in mind?
Legacy will create html files that can be uploaded to free hosted sites.

Can you post your findings to the group? I'm interested in this as well.
I had a site on Freepages, which is a part of RootsWeb/Ancestry.com. But
I took my pages down because their Acceptable Use Policy indirectly
states that a just person's name (no DOB, no Place of Birth) is
considered private information and can not be posted for living persons.
It's fine for a free site and there are plenty of genealogy pages there.

I saw your post - I created mine right on my own hard drive using
Legacy's "Create Web Pages" tab. Then I made a shortcut to the main
page and put that on my desktop. Works great, although I did doll it up
a little bit after Legacy created it.
If I want to share, I can copy it all to a flash drive or a CD and give
it to people. Websites would cost you a few dollars per month.

Why should you 'get in trouble' for posting you query, it's very
relevant. I would advise playing around with creating a Legacy website.
If you like the results, then look for a hosting site. Maybe your ISP
provides space as part of your package. There are also free sites
available, or you can pay a monthly fee.
If the Legacy style doesn't appeal, then your data can be exported to
gedcom and "translated" into one of the on-line programs, e.g. TNG which
has been mentioned.
Personally, I let Legacy create my online family trees, they are
integrated into my website cmy.org.uk (links on the right). I can't
advise on commercial hosts, being fortunate to use a relative's surplus
space.
Whatever you do, enjoy the process!

If you don't want to continue to 'fiddle' with your research and have
reached a point where you consider it as complete as it can be for now,
you might want to consider 'donating' it to the LDS. You can upload a
gedcom with all the info and it will go into their archives and [I think]
be posted on their web pages.
But, with a bit of further exploration, I find that the Internet Archive
will take electronic - digitized books, family and otherwise. So if you
wished to create descendent narratives for your family, they might just
take them and put them online for others to view, etc. Certainly worth
checking into.

nternet-archive/
You could also create files on Family Search, but that involves direct
data input and if you do not 'lock' the files, they will be altered.
I will say, as an avid web design person, the work is tedious, but
addicting. I am the State Coordinator for the CAGenWeb and also County
Coordinator for many USGW States. I love the work, but in truth, spend
hours at it.
I also create files from Legacy that I upload to appropriate locations,
thus sharing my personal research.
Here is a sample:

Scroll down to "From the files of..."
I hope this helps you with some options.

This is useful if your research is NOT complete, as Legacy allows a
direct
connection to the FamilySearch database.
Thus you can add new information to FamilySearch as it is found, and you
can
add new information that other researchers have found and add it to your
database.
