Yes I was already aware that my third great grandfather, was the second
great grandfather of both my mother and of my father and so it is no longer
a startling revelation although as a professional biologist when I first
discovered this about 18 years ago it horrified me!!. What I was
questioning originally was the significance of the + symbol in Legacy Family
Tree 8, and thanks to the responses from Cathy and Steve I now have the
answer.
Surely if we could all take our family trees much further back we would
discover that we are all related to one another and therefore + symbols all
round would be appropriate!!

Did you look at the Relationship Calculator and highlight the line that says
3rd cousin?
That will give you the how.
It simply means that somewhere in your tree amongst his ancestors you have
people who are blood related marrying whether that be 1st cousins or more
distant relatives. Very common but a bit startling if you weren't aware of
it.
Once you look at what the Relationship Calculator says, you'll be able to
say:
Oh - that's right
or - OOPS I've got some people connected wrongly.

It means they have more than one relationship to the starting person.
Right click and choose View additional relationships or choose to go
to the Relationship Calculator to see more information.
