The fix to this problem (it has appeared twice since my initial post and
discussions, different families, now for families with 8 to 13 children
entered, not in their birth order) is as Cathy Pinner suggested – see below.

The easiest, in my opinion, is to click the little Sort button when on the
lower) Children pane, which pops up a list and allows the sort – on completion,
reporting that the list has been sorted in birth date order.

This works for me always. It is no great inconvenience for this “Children
problem” to occur (because this fix is simple), and the multiple warnings given
by Legacy in the Children pane may be indicative that some dates have been
incorrectly entered – in which case, fixing those errors before the Sort is the
necessary remedy of course.

If the children really are in the wrong order, if you right click on a child on
Family View and choose Children's settings OR click the little icon in the top
left corner of the Family View screen, you'll find a Sort button on that
Children's settings screen. There's also a global sort at Tools - Other Tools.
