I had a similar situation. A gt gt uncle (William Thorne) got married twice, but not divorced in between. He got married first in Chatham, Kent in July 1868 and again in August the same year in Brompton, Kent (nr Chatham). On both occasions he married the same person (Rebecca Wilks). He was in the army and Chatham was an army base. On the first occasion her sister was a witness, so family invited. But the second time no family are listed. There are two possible reasons
- The parish church in whose registers the marriage is recorded was closed for repairs and the actual marriage ceremony was in a neighbouring church – maybe there was an irregularity regarding where the banns were called or the wrong vicar conducted the ceremony - As he was in the army, did he marry without permission of his officers. If so a pension wouldn’t be paid to his widow when he died. The army papers show his marriage as the later, August, date. When I talked with people at the Kent Record Office, they said they had found a few other, similar situations but didn’t have a clear reason for the double marriage ceremonies. I recorded this as two distinct Marriage events (MRINs), but obviously only two RIN numbers. As they had no children it doesn’t confuse the Family Group Sheets etc. The dates were so close together that there were unlikely to be children to the first marriage. If : - They married and had children - They remarried and had further children This could have created some confusion on the reports. But luckily this wasn’t a problem. Hence I was happy to just show two marriage events. After William died she went on to marry again in Cardiff, Wales. So the marriage list for her shows -William Thorne -William Thorne -Richard Lewis The only problem I can see with this, technically correct, method is if there were children to both marriages. Some of the siblings would show as half siblings and this designation would extend to later generations – half cousins etc I’d love to hear from anybody connected to this line or who had similar issues at these churches in Chatham Jack From: LegacyUserGroup [mailto:legacyusergroup-boun...@legacyusers.com] On Behalf Of Debby Flood Sent: 10 August 2016 15:49 To: Legacy User Group <legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com> Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] married twice to the same person My uncle did that. I have one uncle and one aunt in the system. Under their events I list each marriage as an event and the divorces as an event. There are no duplicate people, however, I add to the marriage notes the details of their strange relationship. Will each person have 2 spouses, two marriage events and one divorce event, even though the spouses are the same person in each marriage? Will Legacy think I have duplicate names? Or do I just make a note of it in each person's notes? Has anyone had this situation? Thank you for your help!
