Legacy has to be installed on your computer and it uses this folder
...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\ for your Legacy settings. You
cannot move or rename any of this. If you do, it will simply be
recreated with default settings next time you start Legacy.
If photos on the external drive are linked to Legacy, then the drive has
to be available to Legacy whenever you are doing something with media.
Also make sure you have a backup of that drive.
We use external drives for backup of the computer hard drive.
However, the external drive is not a backup if
a) the contents are not also on the hard drive;
b) if the external drive is always connected to the computer. If it's
connected all the time it is subject to malware and power surges etc
like the computer itself.
You probably need to regularly save pictures and Legacy data backup
files for your children and leave instructions for them as to how to get
Legacy installation file from the website and how to restore the data
backup.

I am putting all my family photos on an external drive using the
program Heritage collector. Is it possible to install Legacy 8 on an
external hard drive and it be workable or do I have to install on the
main Drive on the computer this I would like to do for my four
children that I might leave them our family trees and family photos.
Thank you. Nadine Robert
