Ian,

The Legacy Cloud is not designed to be your only backup. It's just an extra which some people will find very useful.
It only stores the last backup of a file.

There are a couple of glitches with the install, which I thought
should not have happened from a professional organization.

One of those is the pre-install backup (which cautious users would
have done already), in regard to the '_Legacy Cloud_' backup. What's
that? you say ...

It appears that it does not allow one to un-check the Legacy Cloud
backup and just proceed with a _normal backup_ to local disk (or
whatever one's configuration in v8 used - which might have been
OneDrive, Google, Dropbox, etc). And to join (register for) Legacy
Cloud at that stage in the install is also fraught - see below.

Also - a minor problem only - of course v9 is a paid upgrade and the
v8 Customer Number doesn't work. If one is impatient or forgetful, and
installs v9 before paying the money, of course what results is an
install of v9 Standard Edition. But it's easy to pay (at the website –
though a little awkward to locate the page and choose from many
packages; I wanted only the $US26.95 upgrade one, at the bottom).

Out of curiosity, I did register for Legacy Cloud and followed through
with a backup after installing v9 with the Deluxe (paid) Customer
Number. I made some minor changes to my Legacy family file and quit,
so as to allow the normal backup (local disk, or OneDrive etc) and the
newly-created Legacy Cloud backup. Both proceded without problems.

I was tempted to pull the plug on my internet connection, to see how
it handled the absence of a connection to the cloud - not frivolous,
as flakey ADSL connections are common-place.

For that same reason - slow or unreliable internet connections - I am
ambivalent about a Legacy Cloud -only backup.

In fact, with my ADSL connection, at best 35% to 45% of ADSL2+
maximum, registering for Legacy Cloud was a very slow process,
requiring multiple refreshes of the browser to get the confirmation
email sent back to me, then a similar slow response trying to link
back to Legacy Cloud for completion of the registration process.

Fortunately, quitting from Legacy v9 for local + cloud backup was
acceptably quick (I have a small family file, few pictures or media
files).

Apart from its cost to Millennia, having a private company 'cloud' can
be a hassle.

Although I don't have it configured that way now, I think I will use
my (local hard drive folder) Microsoft OneDrive for the regular backup
location, since OneDrive's local hard disk synchronization to OneDrive
in the Microsoft cloud is automatic and fully reliable.

Also, as a part of the purchase, I separately downloaded the PDF user
manual / reference manual for v9. It was worthwhile rembering to get it.

Now, to explore the new v9 …

Subject: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9 REPLACED Legacy 8 (with no warning??)

With the jump from version 7 to version 8, we were allowed to have
both installed on our PCs so we could continue to use version 7 while
we "explored" version 8.

This is what I wanted to do with version 9. When I started the
install, I saw that it was installing to a different folder from
Legacy 8, so I thought I was safe.

But when the install was done, my Legacy 8 program folder is now GONE.

I did not see anything (it could have been there, but I did not see
it) that said version 8 would be purged. And since I DID look and saw
that version 9 was installing to a different folder, all appearances
were that I could have both installed at the same time.

In my book, purging version 8 WITH NO WARNING, especially after one
sees that version 9 is going into a different folder, is VERY
deceptive and "not cool". Especially since my version 8 was the
licensed deluxe version but the version 9 is the free version - so now
I am missing features (that were in version 8) WITH NO WARNING (at
least, none that I saw).

At the very least, some type of OBVIOUS pop-up should say something
about "version 8 will be deleted". At the best, a pop-up should come
up ASKING if we "want version 8 deleted (suggested option) or leave
version

8 available".

Don't get me wrong, you guys do an EXCELLENT job with features and
support. And Legacy is a GREAT program. But I think you blew it on
this step . . .
