It's not just viruses; it's malware too. And your computer could already be
infected, meaning you have no idea that the image you send contains the virus
or malware.

Normal looking images can hack your computers. You should not presume the image
files as "innocent" anymore, as they can hide malicious code deep inside its
pixels that could infect your computers.

Photos can be embedded in emails as they are in webpages—and do their dirty
work when you open the mail. Steganography, which in a digital context means
the art of hiding data in another type of file. Malicious code can be hidden
within the pixels in any digital image.

Users typically don't think of common image files (such as .jpg, .png, .bmp,
and .gif pictures) as risky or insecure, but it's possible to conceal malicious
code in an image.

A graphic can easily contain additional bits interwoven within the image,
without noticeably effecting the image's appearance. That additional data can
include code, which is encrypted to make it harder to identify.

Luckily, such an altered image can't do much by itself. No image viewer will
see or know what to do with that code, even if it isn't encrypted. But malware
developers often break up their code into multiple pieces and distribute them
separately to avoid detection.

The information hidden in a picture could contain instructions useful to
another piece of malware on your computer. Once your computer is infected, what
you send can be also. In other words, a device can be compromised, in theory,
after simply opening a picture.

It seems that there are people who would like to have the ability to add
embedded images to posts, and possibly some who are against that (although that
might not be the case). Since the membership of the list is not what it once
was, maybe the ones who make the rules would be open to putting it to a vote of
the remaining members?? Is it possible to get a virus from an embedded image? I
don't know the answer to that, but I know a lot of forums allow that, so I
doubt it's a problem. Who would like to have a vote? If that's acceptable,
count me in for allowing it. If not, I'll abide by the rules.

I agree

And I’ve never know an embedded picture have a virus, it attachment that are a
risk.

And I would not want to put a link to a personal cloud on a public list that
is asking for viruses.

I think if you wish to keep this list alive, there need to be some flexibility
and common sense

I know attachments are banned, but a graphic pasted in the email seems to be a
good way to show how to do something.

Am I wrong?

But they too often carry viruses and/or malware and have been banned from the

Are graphics now allowed on this list? There have been many posted this week.

If they are not, a reminder is really needed!
