Kris,

If your hints were mostly trees then you didn't take control of the Hint options.

Only part (major agreed) of the MyHeritage hints are from people's trees - the Smart Matches - and you can turn off MyHeritage Hints altogether or opt to only have Record Matches. The Record Matches are just as likely to be matches to FamilySearch data and the best guide that FamilySearch has that data. The FamilySearch hints are hints FamilySearch have made from their databases to the FamilySearch tree. They are not a search of the vast useful FamilySearch databases. Also you only get them if you have linked your person to the FamilySearch tree with the FS ID number.

I mostly only have FindMyPast hints on. They're invaluable to me.

The Hints are less valuable without a subscription but not entirely as they indicate the database and that database may be available elsewhere with a different subscription or at FamilySearch.

But I don't jump from Hint to Hint. I only look at Hints when I'm researching someone to see if they're showing something that I would normally initiate a search for (and the answer has so often been yes) or something I wouldn't have thought of searching for. eg FindMyPast give hints from BillionGraves. Since one of these has helped me break down a brick wall of at least 15 years because the gravestone had the birth date and place on it, I'm a fan.

Hi, Allen --

I upgraded to v.9 and after trying it out for a week or two reverted
back to v.8. For me, the new features didn't outweigh the problems.

Regarding the "Hints" specifically, if you aren't subscribed to the
sites that the hints use, it's not much help. The hints also seemed to
consist mostly of information from user uploaded trees, and not
original records. I get the same, or better, results using customized
"Search the Internet" options in v.8.

If you DO decide to upgrade to v.9, be sure you're prepared, otherwise
going back to v.8 can be difficult, if not impossible. Fortunately, I
knew about the potential pitfalls before installing v.9 from the
reports on this list, so it was a simple matter to switch back to v.8.

That said, this is just my experience and there are many users here
who are very pleased with the new version.

What are some of the new features of V9 that makes it worth it? I'm
really not sure I'm ready to upgrade at this point.
